New Accolade Laser: Tattoos Gone in a Flash

Because tattoos are meant to be permanent, removing them presents quite a challenge. Physicians have tried many removal techniques in the past, but laser surgery is now considered the gold standard. Recent advances in laser technology have increased both the safety and effectiveness of this method of tattoo removal.

Cynosure, a leader in cosmetic laser applications based in Westford, MA, is hoping to change that. A new device from Cynosure® is giving physicians and patients alike a new, high-tech option for removing these pesky tattoos from our skin. The Accolade Laser is a high-powered Q-switched alexandrite laser, providing quick and safe removal of unwanted tattoos.

Targets the Ink

The Accolade is a FDA-approved laser which successfully targets unwanted pigment in the skin, removing the discoloration, leaving smooth tone and healthy-looking skin behind. The laser light from the Accolade laser is used to damage the cells in our skin which have taken up the tattoo ink, causing our body to remove the ink and flush it from our skin.

One treatment session may only take about 20 minutes, however multiple treatments are almost always required to remove the tattoo completely. The number of sessions will depend on the size and color of the tattoo. Talk with your doctor to get a more precise estimate on cost and number of treatments.

Accolade Laser Technology

Q-switched laser technology, like that used in the Accolade laser, is now the gold-standard in tattoo removal. "The Q-switched alexandrite laser offers the best wavelength currently available for efficient tattoo removal, safely removing the tattoo pigment with a low likelihood of post-treatment pigmentary anomalies for most patients,” says Dr. Ben Treen. The Accolade laser utilizes this technology to deliver safe and effective treatments for the removal of tattoos, as well as benign epidermal and dermal pigmented lesions, such as freckles, acquired dermal melanocytosis, and nevus of ota.
